Bregenz city is a real gem that shines bright on Lake Constance’s shore. It is the westernmost point of Austria, in the fairy land where Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein meet.
And did I mentioned that from here you can admire the Alps? And the beautiful picture perfect landscapes, just a short walk from the city center. Bergen is the perfect city-break destination if you like a vibrant city in the middle of the nature with good food, chill people and well spotless places.
Although tiny, with only 27 000 inhabitants, Bergenz is HUGE for Vorarlberg, the second tiniest Austrian federal state. The city is the capital of the safest place in Austria, in terms of criminality rate and others. It is also crystal clean and well, full of surprises, attracting a huge amount of Opera fans from all over the world but not only. So here’s my proposal of:
10 Bregenz Vorarlberg Top Experiences you don’t want to miss
1. Take the cable car to Pfänder Mountain – to see the three states view
On top on Pander Mountain you can have a coffee with one amazing and an exquisite view: there states: Austria, Switzerland and Germany.
The cable car runs all year round, yet has two schedules, for summer and winter season.
The locals do it better: hiking up or down the mountain
People from Vorarlberg are very active. They do love everything in connection with the nature. So many do hike daily, depending on the place they stay. Locals in Bregenz will go up or down Pander Mountain, on one of the many trekking routes as their daily exercise.
We took the cable car to go up and descended for about one hour and 40 minutes till we reached the city. And then went to lunch!
2. Cruising on Lake Constance
You either love to sail or just to enjoy a journey in a big ship, Lake Constance has it all. There are countless cruises and activities you can do on the lake from Bregenz. We had a round the harbor cruise, to admire the city and its neighing ones from a different perspective. It was calm, beautiful and see serene.
The solitude of the lake and the Alps mountains beauty
3. Walk on the shore of Lake Constance
Walking on the shore of Lake Constance in Bregenz is one of the most obvious things to do once you reach here. And probably the first as many things happens in here. Yet look why you should wish to take a walk in this particular shore:
We absolutely loved the sunset on the lake, is actually magnificent, the colors, the reflections from the cruise ships in the mirror of the waters.
4. Dine at Gasthaus Kornmesser, on Lake Constance shore
Gasthaus Kornmesser is situated in a place where you might expect to find tourists only. Yet locals alike love this restaurant that is always full so you need to book in advance to be sure you have a table.
The food is glorious, traditional, the lake view is magnificent, the atmosphere euphoric. This place is very layback, like a terrace, waiters are very friendly and we just loved it.
Make sure you will take an Aperol spritz, is the preferred cocktail in Vorarlberg
We also loved: Wirtshaus am See restaurant, a little more pretentious yet without the lake view.
5. Vorarlberg Museum
Bregenz inhabitants are very proud of Vorarlberg Museum. The building is very modern and here there are lots of permanent and thematic exhibits. It is the perfect place to come if you want to learn more about Vorarlberg’s history, traditions and nature.
6. Party ”latino” style at the Beach Bar Bregenz
Atmosfera este estivală i atât de relaxată încăt ai imprsia că te afli pla un bar pe o plajă exotică, nicidecum în parcul orașului. Cocktailurile sunt delicioase, muzica latino și toată lumea veselă și preitenoasă.
7. Attend Bregenz Festival
Over 200 000 people visit Bergen for the festival. In 2017 was carmen, Bizet. In 201 was Turandot. There is a specific theme foreach year, while the stage is changed every 2 years. During the Festival there are lots of concerts, orchestra, opera and so many other events.
8. Herz Jesu Kirche
The roman-catholic church Herz Jesu Kirche was built between 1902-1908. It is huge and so beautiful, with an amazing Organ. You will be amazed by the beautiful main altar, painted with scenes from Jesus Christ life. The other paintings are dedicated to Shepherd, the Good Mary, Joseph and Aloysius.
Martinstrum a church built in 1601 has the biggest onion shape dome in the whole Europe. The view over the city is magnificent. The museum and Saint Martin chapel, 14-15 century are also very special.
9 Wander in the Old City Center
Bregenz is a beautiful spotless city as I previously said. Any corner is picture perfect so it make sense to just get lost on the streets. It is a figure of style, no one will get lost in here, the center is tiny, perfect and you can’t get enough of it. From time to time just stop for an ice-cream, grappa, cappuccino or Aperol sprits. And just chill.
10. Do sports on Bodensee – lake Constance: swim, water sports, whatever
In Vorarlberg everybody does sports. Also lots of visitors. Cycling on the cobbled streets, canoeing in lake Constance, swimming and much more. There is also a strand, that is packed during the summer weekends.
Recommended length of the stay in Bregenz:
For visiting Bregenz the ideal time is three days, two nights. If you attend the Festival of course you can extend your stay and also if you really love to stay here more. Yet in three days you will see the city, do all the above and some more.
Where to stay in Bregenz
Hotel Garni Bodensee is a perfect choice to explore the city! It is traditional, spotless (of course) and has an amazing position so you can walk around the city’s attractions on foot.
I have visited Vorarlberg at the invitation of Vorarlberg Tourism Board as part of the initiatives rolled by #visitvorarlberg office. Actually I actively approached them as the tiny Austrian state charmed me from the first online images. More information about the tourism in Vorarlberg are here.
