There is something about Thassos, as the island is so close to the mainland and Halkidiki peninsula. Therefore, a trip to the highest peak, Ypsarion is a really awesome experience as the view is absolutely incredible 360 degrees.
Thassos is well known as the emerald island, due to its yeah emerald waters. Also it is known as the green island. Nevertheless, it is a mountain island that was once part of the mainland. A trip in the hart of the island reveal dramatic landscapes and rocks, some looking like ancient temples or medieval fortresses remains.
All covered in reach vegetation. Going up you forget you are in an island, yet reaching the top there is all there: the Aegean sea, the Athos mountain, Keramoti, Kavala and also amazing peaks from the mainland Greece. So look how it was my day trip experience:
Jeep Safari Day Trip to Mount Ypsarion Thassos Peak
Our trip started around 10 o’clock, when we boarded in one of the Jeeps at Alexandra Resort and SPA in Potos, south of the island. We were in nine cars and I drive for a while a Suzuky Kimny, before switching with another tourist. Then, I continued my trip in a Suzuky Grand Vitara, the rest of the cars being Rexton, Kia, all 4*4.
Panagouda Monastery in Maries village
Our first stop was in a remote Orthodox monastery, with a 19th century church. Here there is a spring with miraculous powers, the monastery being dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. It is a place that does not have electricity and where Greeks from all over Thassos and also the mainland Greece are coming to attend the service.
Maries Marble Quarry
Thassos island is very famous for its marble, being an exporter ever since 1500 BC! So it makes sense to visit one of its quarries, which is quite impressive. On top, being explained about the process it is definitely a huge plus.
Journey to the Ypsarion peak
The whole trip to the top is amazing as the landscape leaves you breathless! It is so dramatic and so unusual for an island as I said before. Thassos is wild, a little bit rough and savage and this is very visible in the way to the top. We went for 12 kilometers after passing Maries waterfalls and with a 20-30 km/hour speed. So we had plenty of time to enjoy the road!
On top of Thassos island
Reaching the top, we needed to go up for about 2,3 minutes to reach the 204 meters elevation. And then, the biggest challenge: where to look first? To Athos mountain? To Keramoti and the beaches, to Kavala, or mainland Greece? 360 degrees the landscape is amazing.
Also, from the top you have a beautiful view of Panagia village and Golden Beach with Skala Potamia. And the emerald waters, close to the shore, Thassos island is famous for.
Lunch, down to Maries waterfalls
Before ending our trip, we had a picnic in the nature, close to Maries waterfalls. We had salad, tzatziki, souvlaki, bread, juices and it was all delicious and very fresh. We also had a small hiking around and then went to taste some delicious home made sweets with honey: roses, figs, walnuts, pumpkins, all in honey. Plus some liqueurs.
Thassos island is the northernmost Greek Aegean islands. There is no airport on the island, the closest being in Kavala, then a bigger one in Thessaloniki, the second big Greek cities.
You can reach Thassos island with the ferry from Keramoti or Kavala.
