Having 3400 inhabitants spread in a high mountain valley of 192 km², Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal is an heavenly destination for nature lovers. If you love the active summer vacation, in the middle of the Alps, visiting the UNESCO awarded nature park is a must in the itinerary through Vorarlberg Austria. And Gasthof Krone in Biosphärenpark is the perfect place to stay while exploring the beautiful Alpenregion Bludeqnz.
Visiting Vorarlberg, the logical thing to do was to also spend a few days in Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal which is part of Alpenregion Bludenz . Me and a friend spent in total three nights at Gasthof Krone and we only felt for the area. You can easily stay for a week in here, for sure will fully charge your batteries, while getting active in the nature.
A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is an area where people interact with the nature without harming it. It is not only about the nature and the landscape. It is also taking up social, economic and cultural issues, along the environmental aspects.
Moreover, the people are very very welcoming and very friendly. They are calm and eager to share knowledge, communicate with visitors, smiling and just amazing.
The Hotel: Gasthof Krone in Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal Vorarlberg
Gasthof Krone is situated in Sonntag, one of the picturesque villages from the Biosphärenpark Grosses Walsertal, Vorarlberg – the second tiniest state of Austria and the westernmost, bordering three countries: Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
The location is marvelous as it overlooks the mountains, having a picture perfect Alpine view. Right in front of the hotels start the trails, so you can start exploring the region on foot as you come.
Accommodation at Krone Sonntag
Wood, wood and more wood! The rooms at Gasthof Krone are typical for Vorarlberg as a whole: tradition, innovation, modern facilities and minimalism. When you first step in you see a minimal room, with clean lines and design. Looking closer, you observe the details, each perfect, each carefully choose to fit the concept.
All the rooms are very spacious and minimal, perfect to just relax. The mattresses are very comfy and you’ll find the amenities of a three stars plus hotel.

Food and Drink
Gasthof Krone offers many dishes from the austrian cuisine. Most of the food is served is made entirely from local supply, or organic. The Menu is not very diverse, yet you will not get bored for a few days. We simply choose each day another dish and we liked them all.
Most of the time we went for the beer, although the bar is pretty stuffed with international spirits. Moreover, there is a good selection of wines available.
For breakfast there is a selection of cheese and cold cuts from the area, all yummy, fruits, omelets, sausages, cereals and sweets. The quality is great, it is a boutique breakfast, typical for a guesthouse. The coffee is great, the tee organic and the orange juice all natural. Moreover, the yogurts and milk are all from the owners farm and really fresh.
The tap water is drinkable, actually being one of the cleanest you can find in the world.
Staying at Hotel Krone in Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal Vorarlberg is almost a cultural experience
As I mentioned before, Gasthof Krone was completely renovated with workers from the village mainly. Also, it is right across a Museum with outfits from the Alpenregion Bludeqnz.
Here, you will find yourself in the middle of everything, Sonntag style. If there is no party, then you will meet the locals as they come for coffee in the morning, or drinks in the night. Beside restaurant, the terrace is the IT place where youngsters come to chat and date and you’ll see that Aperol Spritz is their drink of choice.
In the three nights we spent in here, we took breakfast with well … the majority of the villagers, as they had a festivity at the Church. Then, in one night we found them again, they come to party: lots of food, drinks, dances and music and almost everybody was wearing traditional outfits.
Again, we end up in the middle of an event held in the Museum, which is quite common, being handled wines, juices and food on top of being invited to take part of the ceremonies. As we do not speak German, we did not understood a thing, yet we admired the Museum, the exhibits and read about all of them in English language. Many people do speak English, though and are really communicative.
Activities in Gasthof Krone and in Sonntag
Visit the Museum. Then hike, hike, hike. Just in front of the hotel, you can take one of the numerous routes. Be careful about the difficulty, take the trails that best fit your fitness level.
The trails are very well marked and you can also download the Vorarlberg App. Here you have all the information you need to enjoy your stay. The App is free and you will find it in Google Play and Apple Store.
There are also a lot of trails for mountain bike and also cable cars, so you can reach the peaks and follow the routes from there. Or do a culinary hike as we did and it was one of the dearest memories from the week we spent in Vorarlberg.
Also, do visit the Biosphärenpark Haus, to take maps, leaflets and other information guides from the area. Here you can also take a cake, coffee or just purchase local produce. There is also a Supermarket in close vicinity to the hotel and another two or three bars.
